Switzerland Welcomes Over 160 Countries to the GFMD 2011 Concluding Debate

Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga of the Federal Department of Justice and Police and GFMD 2011 Chair Ambassador Eduard Gnesa will lead the Swiss Confederation in welcoming about 500 government delegates dealing with migration and development issues, as well as representatives of different international organizations, including members of the Global Migration Group (GMG), international foundations, Regional Consultative processes, and other non-governmental actors.
The GFMD 2011 Concluding Debate will feature simultaneous working sessions on different cluster themes that were discussed in 14 thematic meetings around the world from January to October this year, as well as special sessions on the GFMD assessment exercise (Phase I), the GFMD Platform for Partnerships, and the relationship of the GFMD with non-governmental partners.
It will be preceded by the Civil Society Days (download program) on 29 and 30 November, which will gather around 250 representatives from various civil society groups at the Palexpo Convention Center to deliberate on issues of common concern around the theme, “Taking Action on Labour Migration, Development and the Protection of Migrant Workers and their Families”.
On December 1, both governments and civil society will come together at the GFMD Common Space – to tackle the topic, “Looking at the Big Picture: Demographics, Youth (Un-) Employment, Development and Migration”.
The two-day government meeting will conclude on 2 December with a report on the working sessions and the special session on the GFMD assessment exercise which will be continued in 2012. Finally, Switzerland will hand over the GFMD Chairmanship to incoming GFMD 2012 Chair Mauritius.
