2010 Objectives and thematic focus Following GFMD Troika and Steering Group agreement last year to Mexico’s offer to host the Fourth Meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), the Chair commenced a series of preliminary informal consultations with Mexican Government agencies and national and international think tanks, scholars and expert organizations to explore possible themes or issues to guide the discussions of the 2010 GFMD. These consultations aimed to ensure linkages and continuity across the themes of past GFMD meetings, while introducing new subjects. The preliminary consultations provided the Chair with thematic elements that could be the essential components of the Mexico GFMD 2010 agenda. The operative key words for this process are: shared prosperity/shared responsibility; partnerships; human development; and policy and institutional coherence. With this consideration in mind, Mexico proposes as the central theme of the Fourth GFMD Meeting: "Partnerships for migration and human development: shared prosperity – shared responsibility." The Chair aims to foster a debate on partnerships and synergies among governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector to address both the causes and challenges of migration and their interlinkages with development. Considering the scale of migration today, its close links with development, and the complex effects of these links over recent years, it is important to promote synergies among all stakeholders. These can help us move forward with appropriate actions to address the challenges and opportunities of international migration in a context of international cooperation, shared responsibility and respect for human rights. The thematic proposal has been sent to all member of the Steering Group and Friends of the Forum and it will be the main object of the discussions to be held during their respective meetings.
2010 Team Mexico accepted the symbolic hand-over of the GFMD Chairmanship from Ambassador Vasilis Karantonis, who represented Mrs. Theodora Tzakri, Chair of Greece GFMD 2009, on December 8th 2009, in Mexico City.
