Sustainable & Gender-Sensitive IDP Integration in Pemba Via Urban Durable Solutions

This city practice has been contributed as part of the Call to Local Action for Migrants and Refugees ( see https://localaction.mayorsmechanism.org/)

Given the context of large-scale displacement in Northern Mozambique, the Municipal Council of Pemba City (CMCP), with the support of UN-Habitat and IOM, propose to work synergically on the urban dimension of displacement as an opportunity to ensure a better future for displaced and host communities through increasing IDPs’ integration in urban areas.

EU- Belong project

EU-Belong is a 3-year project run by the Assembly of European Regions (AER) and 12 partners, and co-funded by the AMIF Programme (AMIF-2020-AG-CALL) of the European Union. The project is pioneering the field of inclusion & integration, by using an intercultural approach developed by the Council of Europe to innovate regional policymaking. EU-Belong will showcase how multistakeholder approaches, tailored capacity-building, co-design and transnational mutual-learning leverage regional efforts and generate innovation.

Catalan Program for Human Rights defender

The Catalan program for Human Rights defenders offers temporary shelter, psychological support and training for individuals facing persecution in their home country. Despite these successes, challenges remain, such as ensuring continuous and adequate resources for sustainable reception; maintaining equitable access to housing and basic services; fostering economic support to migrants; coordinating efforts among competent entities and actors.

Catalan Scholarship for Refugees

The Catalan Scholarship for Refugees, funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia), gives refugees who have already started higher education but could not finish it in their countries of origin the opportunity to do so in Catalan universities. The programme is aimed at refugees who are located outside the EU and provides an alternative pathway to entry. Through the scholarship programme, selected refugees are able to go to Spain. Throughout their studies, they have free tuition and a stipend for living expenses.

180 Amsterdammers

The City of Amsterdam, Netherlands launched the 180 Amsterdammers campaign in which it displays the portraits of individuals from 180 different nationalities, in local media as well as social media, to emphasize the diversity and the richness of their community.

Voces del Sur (Voices of the South)

Voces del Sur (Voices of the South) has been running since 2017 and has trained 20 migrant women in journalism and communications to enable them to generate content for an Andalucan local radio network of nearly 100 stations, as well as local television partners. The network has existed for four decades and is a trusted voice in the communities it serves. The purpose of the project is integration through communication not serving good news about migration. It does not encourage the beneficiaries to report on migration but all other topics from daily life.

Solidarity Cities Project

The GRAMALOTE project

The GRAMALOTE project is a case study of the small town of Gramalote in Colombia, which was resettled due to the La Nia phenomenon. The main objectives were to relocate the entire population of the town, which was destroyed by landslides in 2010, and to rebuild the community in a safer location. The targeted population includes the residents of Gramalote, who were displaced by the natural disaster
