A Thematic Workshop on "Climate Change and Human Mobility: towards dignified, coordinated and sustainable solutions”

Rabat, 24 May 2017

The question of the impact of climate change on human mobility has attracted considerable attention over the past years. It has been integrated in the preamble of the Paris Agreement (COP21) and will be discussed at the United Nations in May 2017 as part of the preliminary consultations for the elaboration of the Global compact.

In this context, the GFMD 2017-2018 Co-Chairs, Germany and Morocco, are very pleased to invite all UN Member States and GFMD Observers to participate in the GFMD Thematic Workshop on “Climate Change and Human Mobility: towards dignified, coordinated and sustainable solutions,” to be held in Rabat, Morocco on 24 May 2017

The objective of this thematic workshop is to contribute to the elaboration of the Global Compact on Migration, provide tools to States to respond to challenges created by human mobility associated to climate change, and address the protection needs of affected people.

As illustrated in the draft concept note, this one-day thematic workshop will begin with a scene-setting session, to be followed by two sessions on 1) Understanding and taking Action and 2) Towards responsibility sharing: collaborating to strengthen action, and a closing session. All sessions will be held in plenary. It will be open to Member States, GFMD Observers, and representatives of the private sector and the civil society.
