While migration to and within the Indian Ocean region has been increasing in recent years, available information and data on migration patterns are lacking. A better understanding of current migration trends is essential for policymakers to formulate intervention harnessing migration’s beneficial effects and mitigating its negative consequences. Statistical data on international migration flows and characteristics of population stocks with migration background represent the backbone of the Migration Profile whose main objective is to support an evidence-based policy. ‘Migration in Mauritius: A Country Profile 2013’ brings such evidence by considering all data available so far and trying to extract from these data a consistent view of the situation in Mauritius as far as international migration is concerned. It also provides a review of the migratory trends and recommendations on how best to improve policy-making with respect to migration, taking into account the socioeconomic conditions prevalent in the country. This first Migration Profile for Mauritius shall constitute the basis of discussion on how Mauritius intends to go about mainstreaming migration into development planning.
