At the Migration Week in New York, the Ecuadorian Chair of the 2019 Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), represented by Mr. Santiago Chávez Pareja, Vice Minister for Human Mobility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in a series of high-level meetings and events to present the GFMD 2019 thematic priorities and highlight relevant GFMD’s policy discussions and recommendations.
While the Migration Week is underway in New York, the Government of Ecuador, represented by Mr. Santiago Chavez Pareja, Vice Minister for Human Mobility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted a reception to mark the launch of their Chairmanship of the 2019 Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) on 27 February at the UN Headquarters. 19 – 21 February, Geneva — The Government of Ecuador kicked off its 2019 Chairmanship of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) with the first GFMD Preparatory Meetings and Roundtable Team Consultations at the Palais des Nations. The three-day GFMD meetings took place two months after the adoption and formal endorsement of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), and one week before the New York Migration Week (Feb 26 to 28). The meetings convened over 100 UN Member States and some 20 GFMD Observer organizations.
5 to 7 December, Marrakesh —On the eve of the historic Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), the German and Moroccan GFMD Co-Chairs convened the Eleventh GFMD Summit, marking the culmination of the two-year Chairmanship from the beginning of 2017 to the end of 2018. In September 2018, the Government of Ecuador’s voluntary offer to chair the GFMD in 2019 was strongly endorsed by participating Member States. Ecuador, a long-term and active member of the GFMD, brings to the GFMD process its expertise as a major migrant receiving country with world-recognized migration policies, and an active voice in international migration affairs. It also represents a return of the Chairmanship to Latin America for the first time since 2010.
