Around the world, a record number of women are now migrating to seek work and better lives. For many, migration yields these benefits; for others, it carries dangerous risks, such as exploitation in domestic work, and vulnerability to violence. Migration policies and practices have been slow to recognize these risks and take steps to make the process safe for women.
Governments are increasingly recognizing Migration Profiles as a comprehensive data collection and capacity building tool for informed and coherent policy planning. To date, more than 100 migration profiles have been prepared ranging from short statistical overviews, to longer and more comprehensive reports based on extensive consultation and analysis of the migration situation of a particular country.
Mainstreaming Migration into Development Planning
Since the first General Assembly High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development in 2006, states have explored, through the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) process, collaborative approaches to enhancing the benefits and curbing the negative impacts of migration for development. The discussions and issues addressed at the GFMD have considerably evolved since it was first convened in 2007.

The Africa Regional Migration Program (ARMP) focuses on enhancing the capacities of host governments and civil society to support the resilience of local communities. Its primary objective is to strengthen migration governance, promote partnerships, and enhance preparedness for crises. This program will enhance the coordination and cooperation of governments in addressing migration challenges and leveraging multiple opportunities associated with well-managed migration for both migrants and host societies.
