The overarching goal of the Making Migration Safe for Women programme, implemented by UN Women, is to ensure that migration is safe for women migrating from, into and through Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali and Niger and international norms and standards for protecting and promoting migrant women’s rights are strengthened. 

The programme aims to improve the use and collection of sex-disaggregated data and provide robust evidence and research on migrant women to inform national policy making. It also seeks to enable migrant women and their organizations to advocate for the protection of their rights and strengthen the alliance building of migrant women’s organizations. 

In particular, the project aims to contribute to the following three outcomes: 

1. National governments develop/strengthen migration policies, laws and services that are gender-responsive; 
2. Migrant women and their organizations advocate for the promotion and protection of migrant women’s rights 
3. Governments and relevant international human rights bodies ensure the promotion and protection of migrant women’s rights through strengthened global norms and standards.

This UN Women guidance document was developed based on a gender-responsive survey instrument conducted by UN Women, together with the National Statistics Service of Niger and IOM Niger, in Niger in 2023 for collecting and analysing gender data in migration, as part of UN Women’s Making Migration Safe for Women Programme.

IOM formally formulated the model of Skills Mobility Partnerships (SMPs) in 2019. 

SMPs are inter-state agreements concluded between states to promote human capital development and positive labour market outcomes for both country of origin and destination.

They are an innovative mechanism to share the benefits of migration and mobility and to serve the interests of migrants, communities and employers. 

While, SMPs can vary in form, modality, specific objectives and sectors, targeted skill level, included type of mobility (temporary, long term), as well as the level of stakeholder involvement, they all include the following five components:

3. Training 
4. Skills Recognition
5. Migration/Mobility

Over the course of three years, PICs under the Pacific Climate Change Migration and Human Security programme (PCCMHS) have been actively engaging in an ambitious exercise to develop a regional collaboration framework on human mobility as a result of climate change.

The Pacific Climate Mobility Framework will provide a coordinated approach to climate induced human mobility in the Pacific region, taking into account the unique socio-cultural, economic, and environmental contexts of PICs

14th GFMD Summit - Platform for Partnerships: Climate and Human Mobility

The Climate Mobility Pavilion (CMP), organized by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) in association with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), was a dedicated space at COP28 for actors to discuss and advance solutions for mitigating and addressing the impacts of the climate crisis on human mobility. It aimed to center efforts on the adaptation journeys of climate vulnerable communities, as well as advance people-centered climate action.

From 1 to 10 December, in the Blue Zone of COP28, the CMP featured a programme of events that brought together critical geographies and key constituencies, while presenting new knowledge, policy ideas, practices, and solutions for addressing climate mobility. It was a platform for all affected regions and communities to bring forward their voices and contributions. The Pavilion also featured a dedicated exhibition space for documentaries, videos, photography, and artwork.

The Climate Mobility Summit is an all-day event in the margins of the United Nations High-Level Week bringing together global champion leaders and Principals of relevant UN organizations and stakeholder entities to discuss ways to harness climate mobility for adaptation and resilience, as well as to press for climate action to prioritize climate-resilient development around the adaptation needs of populations affected by the climate crisis, particularly those forced to leave the places they call home.

At COP27 (2022), Tuvaluan Minister Simon Kofe announced that Tuvalu will become the First Digital Nation: that it would digitally recreate its land, archive its rich history and culture, and move all governmental functions into a digital space.

The Digital Nation State helps build a new digital ecosystem, founded on meaningful connectivity, that will allow for strengthened governance, administration and connectivity structures, so as to cement the connection between people and country; as well as citizens and government amidst the disruptive challenges of the climate crisis. This will ensure the continued agency of the government on behalf of the people, and the full participation of citizens in the country’s political and cultural fabric in any longer- term adaptation strategy.

In particular, this digital transformation will allow Tuvalu to retain its identity and continue to function as a state, even after its physical land is gone. It will also facilitate the governance of a Tuvaluan diaspora by creating a virtual space where Tuvaluans can connect with each other, explore ancestry and culture, and access new opportunities for business and commerce in various industries. Moreover, a permanent digital replica of Tuvalu – a new "defined territory" – will aid in the fight for continued sovereignty under international law.

Rising Nations Initiative and German Archaeological Institute will create an online repository and presentation platform of culture & heritage for the benefit of the Tuvaluan people and the pan-Pacific community, as well as researchers and the global public.

The project is funded by the Federal Foreign Office. 

 The repository will reunite, in one virtual place, digital representations of Tuvalu’s existing tangible and intangible cultural heritage — heritage which is threatened by anthropogenic climate change and sea-level rise.

The rich collection of digital assets will include contemporary recordings of performances and other intangible cultural heritage practices, a living archive of oral histories and interviews, available as audio files and as transcriptions, and three-dimensional interactive models and maps of the nine islands. Virtual visitors will be able to see and experience the threatened unique cultural landscapes, marine life, and coastal and island environments of Tuvalu before may be totally inundated by the rising seas.

The President of the UNGA hosted a Breakfast Summit on Addressing Existential Threats of Sea-level Rise in September 2023, which was attended by eight Heads of State and Government and 14 ministers, as well as chiefs of UN entities. The Summit resulted in the launch of the Coalition for Addressing Sea-level Rise and its Existential Threat (C-SET), co-chaired by Germany and Tuvalu and led by a Group of Champions, namely Antigua and Barbuda; Costa Rica; Denmark; Morocco; New Zealand; Bangladesh; the Republic of Korea; Malta; Palau; and Romania.
